Let's be honest: most creators pick their export codec once — usually whatever their editing software defaults to — and never think about it again. And for a long time, that was fine. H.264 worked everywhere, and "everywhere" was good enough.

But it's 2024, and "everywhere" has gotten a lot more complicated. Your viewers are watching on 4K OLED TVs, cheap Android tablets, rural broadband with 8 Mbps connections, and 5G phones that can technically handle anything you throw at them. The idea that one encoding choice serves all of those scenarios equally is, at this point, a myth worth retiring.

This is a technical conversation, but it doesn't have to be a painful one. Let's break down what's actually happening in the codec landscape and how to make smarter choices depending on what you create and who you're creating for.

A Quick Orientation: What a Codec Actually Does

A codec (short for coder-decoder) is the algorithm that compresses your video for storage and transmission, then decompresses it for playback. The goal is always the same: get the best possible image quality at the lowest possible file size, without creating so much computational overhead that devices struggle to decode it in real time.

The tension between those three variables — quality, file size, and decoding complexity — is what defines every codec's trade-offs. Understanding those trade-offs is what separates creators who encode strategically from those who just hope for the best.

H.264: The Old Reliable That's Starting to Show Its Age

H.264 (also called AVC) has been the dominant video codec for over a decade, and its longevity is genuinely impressive. It's supported on virtually every device, every browser, every platform, and every CDN on the planet. If you want guaranteed playback compatibility across your entire audience, H.264 is still the safest bet.

The problem is efficiency. H.264 needs significantly higher bitrates to achieve quality levels that newer codecs can hit at a fraction of the data. For a creator hosting their own content or paying for bandwidth by the gigabyte, that inefficiency has a real dollar cost. It also means longer buffer times for viewers on slower connections — and in the US, where rural broadband remains genuinely inconsistent across large swaths of the country, that audience segment matters more than most urban-centric creators assume.

For short-form social content or anything that lives exclusively on platforms that handle re-encoding automatically (which is most of the major ones), H.264 at a sensible bitrate remains perfectly reasonable. But if you're self-hosting, distributing to smart TVs, or targeting 4K delivery, you're leaving efficiency on the table.

H.265: Better Compression, Frustrating Licensing Drama

H.265 (HEVC) delivers roughly double the compression efficiency of H.264 at equivalent quality — a meaningful improvement that translates directly to smaller files and lower bandwidth costs. It also handles high-resolution content better, which matters as 4K becomes the expectation rather than the exception for premium content.

So why hasn't it replaced H.264 everywhere? Licensing. H.265 sits in a complicated patent pool that has historically made it expensive or legally murky to implement broadly. Browser support remains inconsistent — Firefox, for example, doesn't support H.265 natively on all platforms. For creators distributing via embedded web players, that's a real compatibility headache.

H.265 makes the most sense in controlled environments: Apple ecosystem delivery (where support is strong), 4K streaming to smart TVs, or offline distribution where you control the playback device. It's a genuinely good codec caught in an intellectual property mess that has slowed its adoption considerably.

VP9: Google's Answer That Mostly Worked

VP9 was Google's royalty-free alternative to H.265, and it found its home primarily on YouTube. It offers compression efficiency comparable to H.265 without the licensing complications, and it has solid browser support thanks to Chrome's dominance in the market.

For creators whose primary distribution channel is YouTube, VP9 is already part of the picture — YouTube re-encodes your uploads into VP9 (among other formats) automatically. You're not really making a VP9 decision so much as benefiting from one.

For self-hosted content, VP9 encoding is computationally expensive to produce, which makes it a slower export process and a heavier lift for servers doing on-the-fly transcoding. It's a capable codec, but AV1 has largely superseded the conversation around it for new implementations.

AV1: The Codec That's Actually Winning the Future

AV1 is where the industry is clearly headed. Developed by the Alliance for Open Media — a coalition that includes Google, Apple, Netflix, Amazon, Microsoft, and Meta — it's royalty-free, highly efficient, and increasingly well-supported across devices and browsers.

The compression gains over H.264 are substantial: AV1 can deliver comparable quality at 30-50% lower bitrates. For a platform streaming thousands of hours of content, that's transformative. For an independent creator paying for CDN bandwidth or storage, it's a meaningful cost reduction.

The catch has historically been encoding speed. AV1 is computationally intensive to encode, which made it impractical for real-time applications like livestreaming and painfully slow for large catalog encoding. That's changing fast. Hardware encoder support has expanded significantly — NVIDIA's RTX 40-series GPUs and Intel's Arc line both include dedicated AV1 encoders, and software encoder performance continues to improve.

H.264 at an appropriate bitrate (3,500–6,000 Kbps for 1080p) is reliable and universally supported by streaming ingest servers.

If you're producing long-form on-demand content for self-hosting: Start testing AV1 for new uploads, particularly if your audience skews toward newer devices. Maintain H.264 as a fallback for older playback environments. A hosting platform with adaptive bitrate delivery (ABR) can serve different formats to different devices automatically, which largely removes the compatibility concern.

If you're distributing to Apple platforms: H.265 deserves serious consideration. Apple's ecosystem has strong HEVC support across iPhone, iPad, Mac, and Apple TV, and the compression efficiency pays off on a platform where storage and bandwidth matter to the user experience.

If you're uploading to major platforms that re-encode anyway: Export in high-quality H.264 or H.265 and let the platform handle the rest. Obsessing over your upload codec on YouTube or Vimeo is largely wasted energy — they're going to transcode it regardless.

The One-Size-Fits-All Era Is Over

The uncomfortable truth is that codec strategy in 2024 requires actual thought. The good news is that the tools to execute a smarter approach have never been more accessible — hardware encoders are faster, hosting platforms are more flexible, and the documentation around AV1 in particular has matured considerably.

Streaming smarter isn't just a tagline. It means making deliberate technical choices that serve your specific audience, reduce your distribution costs, and keep your content playable as the device landscape keeps shifting. Your codec is one of those choices — and it's one that's absolutely worth making on purpose.
